Dental Emergencies

Dental emergencies can happen anywhere, anytime. When you are suffering from an accident or traumatic injury, you need fast, reliable care. In these cases, same-day treatment can mean the difference between losing a tooth and saving it.

At Chagrin Highlands Dental Group, we understand the importance of treating an emergency as soon as possible. That is why we always do our best to accommodate new and existing patients when they are suffering from a dental emergency.

What Should I Consider a Dental Emergency?

A dental emergency is usually categorized by a serious injury or illness that requires immediate care. This can be caused by a variety of things such as a sudden injury, trauma, or a severe infection in the mouth. In some cases, ignoring a dental emergency can lead to dangerous complications.

Dental emergencies can include:

  • Very painful toothache
  • Lost dental crown or filling
  • A broken, cracked tooth
  • Dental abscess
  • A lost tooth
  • Severe infection in the teeth or gums

If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, call us right away at 216-464-9800. We will do everything we can to see you as soon as possible during our regular business hours.

Can You Do an Emergency Root Canal?

Serious infection and decay in the teeth, roots, and gums can be painful and dangerous. If ignored, your infection could spread and lead to widespread gum damage and tooth loss. Usually, we will schedule a root canal after an examination by Dr. Desatnik.

Sometimes, however, an emergency root canal may be essential for your health. In these cases, we will conduct your procedure as soon as possible – usually within one or two business days.

Do I Need an Emergency Extraction?

While we always do our best to preserve your natural teeth, sometimes a tooth may be beyond saving. If you are suffering from extreme pain and discomfort in one of your teeth, you may need to have an emergency extraction.

An emergency extraction will help relieve your pain and prevent your infection from spreading to other parts of the mouth. Before pulling a tooth, Dr. Desatnik will apply a local anesthetic to the area so you won’t feel any discomfort. To make your visit as comfortable as possible, we also offer several dental sedation options such as nitrous oxide (laughing gas) and oral conscious sedation.

What is a Periodontal Abscess?

A periodontal abscess is a pocket of bacteria in the gums. It often looks like a small red ball of tissue and is common among those with severe gum disease. If you notice a periodontal abscess on your gums, you may require emergency treatment. The earlier we can address this problem, the easier it will be to prevent the infection from spreading.

What is a Traumatic Oral Injury?

Dental trauma occurs when you suffer from a sudden, serious injury in your mouth. These types of accidents are common among those who regularly play high-impact sports. The severity of dental trauma can range from a small crack to a lost tooth. If you break or lose a tooth in an accident, call us right away. The sooner we see you, the better chance we have of saving your tooth.
