dental examDr. Douglas Desatnik believes that routine check-ups are one of the best tools you can use for the protection of your teeth and gums. Oral Exams & X-Rays

As part of your routine check-up, Dr. Desatnik will perform an oral exam. The purpose of this is exam is to screen for any cavities, tooth fractures, plaque or pockets of bacteria along the gums, occlusion issues, or other irregularities that may have developed since your last visit. Digital x-rays are used to help detect issues that may not be visible on the surface of the teeth. Dr. Desatnik recommends diligence in scheduling your routine check-ups twice a year to improve the chance of early detection. Earlier detection of minor dental concerns can lead to prompt treatment, prevent more serious conditions from developing, save you the expense of more costly procedures, and help you maintain healthy teeth and gums.

Oral Cancer Screenings

Oral cancer screenings are an important component to taking care of your teeth and gums. Since oral cancer does not exhibit symptoms in its earliest stages, screenings by a dentist can be essential to early detection. When oral cancer is caught early on, survival rates significantly increase. Screenings are painless, can be completed in about two minutes, and can be performed at the time of your routine oral exam. Dr. Desatnik recommends that his patients have an oral cancer screening every year. For patients who smoke, two screenings per year are recommended.

Periodontal Exams & Charting

Periodontal (gum) disease may not show early symptoms. As the disease continues to affect your gums, you may eventually experience red, sensitive, swollen, or bleeding gums. If the condition is allowed to worsen, your gum tissue can recede or your teeth may begin to shift. Periodontal exams are used to check the health of the gums and help ensure they are free of disease. If you are suffering from periodontal disease, Dr. Desatnik can use state-of-the-art dental technology to help resolve your condition and prevent more severe consequences such as tooth loss and even risks to your overall health.

Saliva DNA Analysis for Advanced Individualized Risk Assessment

Saliva DNA testing is a fast and easy method of screening for a number of serious health concerns. Using a saliva sample that is sent to a laboratory, Dr. Desatnik can receive important information about your oral health. Oral DNA testing can be used to:

  • Detect changes in your DNA, which may increase your risk for gum disease
  • Determine which bacteria are causing gum disease for more effective treatment
  • Detect HPV infection, which may increase your risk for oral cancer

After viewing the results of your saliva DNA tests, Dr. Desatnik can advise you on the best way to proceed in maintaining your oral health.

Dental Cleanings

Dr. Desatnik considers brushing, flossing, and rinsing twice a day essential routines for keeping your mouth healthy. To supplement these routine safeguards for oral health, Dr. Desatnik also recommends professional dental cleanings twice a year. Dental cleanings can be combined with your routine oral exam and help maintain your oral health, as well as prevent future dental issues.

Fluoride Treatment

Though fluoride treatments are most commonly associated with children, they can be just as beneficial for adults. Our professional-strength fluoride rinses can prevent tooth decay when performed twice a year. These rinses are much more powerful than over-the-counter fluoride products and can be used to protect your teeth between dental visits.

Sealants are also frequently recommended for children, though they can offer effective cavity prevention for patients of any age. Used to cover the crevices along the chewing surface of the back teeth, sealants can keep these areas free of bacteria. Since these teeth can be difficult to properly clean with brushing, flossing, and rinsing alone, sealants serve as an extra safety measure against cavities and bacteria growth.
