No one wants to lose a tooth. At Chagrin Highlands Dental Group, we prioritize keeping your natural teeth healthy for a lifetime. If a tooth is injured or infected, we will do everything possible to save it. Unfortunately, there are some situations where a tooth is beyond saving. In these cases, an extraction may be our only alternative.
If Dr. Desatnik determines that one or more of your teeth need to be removed, you can rest assured that you are in good hands. Our team is always committed to making your dental experience comfortable and positive!
Why Would a Tooth Need to Be Removed?
There are several reasons to extract a tooth. Some of these include:
Every situation is different. Not every hurt or damaged tooth will need to be removed. Before recommending an extraction, Dr. Desatnik will conduct a thorough examination of your mouth and will exhaust every other treatment option. Extraction is always a last resort.
What is the Tooth Extraction Procedure?
There are two types of tooth extractions – simple extractions and surgical extractions.
Simple extractions are generally straightforward and easy to perform. We use this procedure on teeth that can be seen above the gum line. Dr. Desatnik will begin by using a local anesthetic to numb the area. Once your mouth is numb, he will loosen the tooth with a pair of forceps. By gently moving it back and forth, Dr. Desatnik can loosen the tooth and easily pull it out.
Surgical extractions are used to remove problematic or hard-to-reach teeth. For example, Dr. Desatnik may recommend this type of procedure for a tooth that has broken off below the gum line and cannot be removed with normal equipment. Some teeth, such as wisdom teeth, can cause problems when they erupt. In these cases, a surgical extraction will be used to remove a problematic tooth before it has time to do damage to the surrounding teeth and gums.

Dr. Desatnik and his office have been the best dental experience I have had. They are always on time, the office is spotless and the staff is extremely helpful. But most of all, Dr. Desatnik takes his time with you and explains the procedures. He is thorough, gentle and develops a great rapport with his patients. Highly recommended!
