Sinus Lift

Dental implants are one of the best tooth-replacement options available. Implants provide strength and support while promoting bone growth in the jaw. Unfortunately, not everyone has the jawbone density to support an implant. This is generally the case in the upper back portion of the mouth, where the sinuses are located above the upper jawbone.

If you have experienced bone loss, or if your sinuses are too close to your bone, we can perform a sinus lift and bone grafting surgery to correct this problem. With a sinus lift procedure, nearly everyone can benefit from dental implants!

What is a Sinus Augmentation?

A sinus lift, or sinus augmentation, is the process of preparing your upper jaw for dental implants. This treatment might be needed if there is not enough bone to support an implant, or if a person’s sinuses are too close to the jaw. In these cases, Dr. Desatnik will surgically raise the sinuses and apply a bone graft. A sinus lift is necessary for roughly 20% of dental implant patients.

How Does Bone Grafting Work?

Bone grafts are generally taken from either the hip or tibia. You can use your own bone matter, or you can use bone from a donor. Once the sinuses have been lifted and the bone graft is complete, your new bone material will begin to merge with your natural jaw bone. After the area has healed, the bone on the upper jaw will be thick enough to support an implant.

How Long Will This Process Take?

The first step is to have a consultation. Dr. Desatnik will discuss your options and examine your teeth, gum, and bone structures. If it is discovered that a sinus lift is necessary to install your implant, we will need to prepare bone material for a graft. After this, we will conduct your sinus lift treatment.

It usually takes three to six months to recover. Once the area has fully healed, Dr. Desatnik will install your new implants. After this, it will be another four to six months before we can place your final tooth.
